RIchard Lee Simpson, 78, of Dearborn, MI passed away February 3, 2025.
Richard Lee Simpson was born September 7, 1946, in Decatur, Illinois to Eartha Mae Jones and Jesse Willard Simpson. He was the fourth eldest child of eight children. Richard accepted Christ at an early age at Baptist Bible Church in Decatur, Illinois under the leadership of Reverend Robert Hunter.
While in high school, he earned accolades in band, wrestling, track, and music. He participated in Sophomore and Junior talent shows and was also in The Letterman’s Club. After high school, Richard enlisted in the United States Army and served from 1964 to 1968, completing tours of duty in Vietnam and Germany, receiving awards and Decorations of Honor for his years of service. After his Honorable Discharge from the Military, the family moved to Highland Park, Michigan. Richard married Carolyn Ann Hill in 1970, and two children were born to this union, Erik and Richelle Simpson.
Richard’s passion was music and was known as the “Singing Drummer”, and many knew him as Doctor Foot because of his expertise on the drums. He performed all over the world and was the owner of the Golden Rule Band and traveled extensively with them, and later was inducted in the Motown Hall of Fame. At one time, Richard was the top limousine driver for Aretha Franklin. He took great pride in his work as a limousine driver, while working for prestigious companies such as Entertainment Express and Pegasus Limousine Company for many years.
Richard departed this life on February 3, 2025, with his family and friends singing spiritual hymns as he entered the Pearly Gates. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Nellie Ann, and his brother Jesse Dale.
He leaves to cherish his memory, children : Erik and Richelle Simpson, siblings: Donna Long, Curtis Simpson (Barbara Simpson); Brenda Wilson (Melvin); Lynda Moran; Phyllis Smith (Lem); Grandchildren: India and Paris Simpson; lifetime friend and partner Deborah Rivers and family: Jennifer, Joseph, Jessica, Jesse, and Joslyn, Justin Rivers, Ja’Quan and Jamie Ratcliff, Jaylen, Jayshon, and Jayden Williams.
