Paul McClendon

d. June 9, 2019

Paul McClendon, Age 98, of Lauderhill, Florida passed away June 9, 2019.

Paul Jones McClendon was born on July 6, 1920 in Tignall, GA. He was the oldest son and 1 of 6 children born to Paul and Georgia McClendon. He attended high school in Washington, GA where he excelled in academics and enjoyed playing basketball.

Immediately following high school Paul attended college in Albany, GA. He was known around campus for babysitting his roommate’s baby brother Martin Luther King Jr.

Paul later moved to Detroit, MI where he was drafted into the US armed services. He served in WWII in the United States National Coast Guard. When he returned from the war he met and married Kathryn Turner McClendon and together they had three children, two of whom preceded him in death (Paulette and Gerald).

Paul worked for the US Post Office until he decided to venture off and explore his entrepreneurial passions. Paul owned several businesses in the city of Detroit.

Paul gave his life to Christ at an early age and continued to serve him until the day he transitioned.

After being a faithful resident of Detroit, MI for many many years he relocated to Florida with his daughter Paulette. Most recently he lived with his grandson Bruce who showed him a great deal of tender love, care and kindness.

Paul was blessed to have his eldest grandsons Bruce and Brian and his eldest great grandchild Yakell in Florida with him. Daddy Paul as we affectionately called him shared frequent outings with Yakell and ensured that he had the fortune of seeing his family via FaceTime.

Daddy Paul enjoyed talking to his family on the phone for a total of 1 minute and 56 seconds (max).

Paul was known to be the first person at every event. He prided himself on being early (very early). He loved to cook and I’m sure many of you here today had the pleasure of trying his scrumptious sweet potato pie, delicious peach cobbler, or his delectable soup… ummmm ummmm um!!!

He was definitely a hard fighting soldier on the battlefield bringing souls to Jesus. He was honest, upfront, and direct. You could count on him. He lived for Christ and his family. The man you saw on Sunday was the man everyone else saw every day. He was a MAN, a ROLE MODEL, and an example of LOVE!

Paul leaves to cherish his beloved memory, his sister Evangelean Henry, his brother Jimmy McClendon, his son Paul Travis McClendon, his grandchildren Brian McClendon, Bruce (Ivy) McClendon, Kendra Pack, Kaija Pack, Ronette Martin, Aiyana (Malvin) Hayes, Kimberly (Jamar) Owens, Kody (Erica) Gwynn, Travis (Tatyana) McClendon, Gerald (Bernadette) Mckelvy, Kathryn (Nick) Ware, Antwoine McClendon, Kaycie McClendon and Kori McClendon. He had 30 great grandchildren and 7 great-great grands; many nieces, nephews, and a host of cousins and brothers and sisters in Christ that will cherish his memory. He was abundantly loved and will be immensely missed.
